John Cena has opened up about his WWE retirement tour, explaining why now is the best time for him to prepare to step away from wrestling.
Cena will hang up his jorts for good at the end of 2025, meaning we only have around eight months left of Cena as an active competitor.
In an interview with Daniel Cormier for ESPN, John Cena was asked why he has chosen to prepare for retirement now, instead of continuing on with his part time schedule.
Noting that he always promised to step away when he felt slower than before, Cena explained:
“So I’ve had a whole lot of time to think about this. I kind of weaned off the full-time schedule in 2017, it’s 2025, so we’re talking over a half-decade to contemplate like ‘oh man, this is kind of where it’s at.'”
“I also made a cemented promise even in my 20s to the audience, when I am a step slow, I’m out of the door, understand when your run is over and bow out gracefully. I feel like I’m a step slow, i’m there.”

Cena noted that when he was younger he succeeded because of his strength and enthusiasm, but more recently his strength has been replaced by wisdom.
He summarised:
“If you look at the performers today, it’s extremely physically demanding and I don’t ever want somebody to buy a ticket and feel robbed.”
