John Cena has addressed the WWE vs. NXT theme of Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.
After 23 years as an active performer, 17-time world champion John Cena will officially call time on his storied career at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13 in Washington D.C.
While the focus of the event is, of course on Cena’s final WWE in-ring performance, the rest of the card will be built around WWE’s established stars taking on the stars of the future in NXT, something Cena himself confirmed during his appearance on the November 10 episode of WWE Raw.
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live ahead of Saturday Night’s Main Event, Cena discussed his reasoning for wanting his final show to be largely focused on WWE’s younger talent, rather than strictly being a “tribute” to the past:
“I actually suggested, instead of a tribute and spending the whole show based around the past, I wanted to have my final match, which Ill get my chunk of time, and then dedicate the rest of the show to the future.
“So if you tune in to Saturday Night’s Main Event on Peacock on the 13th you’ll see my final in-ring performance, but you’ll also get a look at the major WWE stars facing future stars, because the way I came into the business was a major star, gold medalist (Kurt Angle) was like, ‘Open challenge to anyone’, and me no name came walking out there and that was the start of this crazy ride.
“So, 23 years later I kind of wanted to return the favor and you’re gonna see technically some ‘minor leaguers’ step up to the plate and see if they can make an impact. “So I think that’s kind of cool on the way out to give most of the programming to the future of the business, I’m really excited about that.”
