At NXT Takeover: New York, Johnny Gargano captured the NXT Championship in a sensational bout with Adam Cole. The two out of three falls match was rated five and a half stars by Dave Meltzer, the highest rating ever for an NXT or even WWE match.
At this Saturday’s NXT Takeover: XXV show, Gargano and Cole squared off in the main event once again, this time with Adam Cole picking up the win and walking away with the NXT Championship. The match, just like their last clash, was fantastic.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer gave Gargano vs. Cole II the still very impressive five and a quarter stars, one quarter less than their encounter two months ago. On the topic of the bout, Meltzer had the following to say:
“This was nonstop action with great heat. The crowd decided it was going to be a classic, and they got one. Both went for their finishers right away.”
With regards to the ratings for the other four matches on the NXT Takeover: XXV card, Meltzer gave them the following:
- Matt Riddle def. Roderick Strong – ****1/2
