Jon Moxley Was Going To Face Former WWE Star At Wrestle Kingdom

Wrestle Kingdom 14 saw Jon Moxley pull double duty with two title matches in two days. On the first day, he won the IWGP United States Championship from Lance Archer and then defended it against Juice Robinson the following day.

Now, we know this was not the original plan. Moxley spoke with Dave Meltzer and Garrett Gonzales on Wrestling Observer Radio and revealed who his original opponent was. Shockingly, the plan was to face former WWE star Karl Anderson.

The idea was for Moxley to take out Juice Robinson, which ended up happening, as Robinson was representing the New Japan dojo. Then, the original dojo-boy, Karl Anderson would return to face Moxley at Wrestle Kingdom. Ultimately, Anderson chose to stay in WWE and thus the plans fell apart.

Anderson would be released by WWE on Black Wednesday earlier this year and has been vocal about planning to return to New Japan. This means a match between them could still be in the works.

Moxley has not wrestled for New Japan since February. He has been unable to travel to Japan because of the pandemic, but KENTA was recently crowned as his next challenger.  Zack Sabre Jr. had also teased facing Moxley but those plans were stopped by the pandemic as well.
