Katsuyori Shibata Discusses How Many Matches He Thinks He Has Left

Katsuyori Shibata made a shocking appearance back at the G1 Climax 31 finals, where he took on Zack Sabre Jr in a ‘grappling match’. The grappling match was Shibata’s first time in the ring since April 2017.

Shibata’s last official match took place on April 9, 2017 at the NJPW Sakura Genesis show, where it was revealed that he had a subdural hematoma following his match with Kazuchika Okada.

Shibata recently spoke to KAMINOGE (translation via golden_kuma), where he revealed how many more matches he believes he has left in him.

He said:

“That’s the thing I wanna work on. Carefully. I’d like to talk to the doctor and the company about how often I should wrestle. This is just my feeling, but I probably have only a handful of matches left in me if I’m able to wrestle. A couple of matches per year. Just like the pace of MMA fights. I’ll have medical tests before and after each match. I think I need to improve my physical conditions while seeking for matches/rules that fit it. So the exhibition match at the G1 finals show was a huge step forward,”

Shibata took to the microphone after the grappling match, where he promised the NJPW fans that his next match would be an official wrestling match.
