A top AEW star is set to challenge El Hijo Del Vikingo for the AAA Mega Championship at the AAA TripleMania Tijuana event.
On the March 22 episode of AEW Dynamite, Kenny Omega defeated El Hijo Del Vikingo in a bout billed as a “dream match” after the two stars were supposed to face each other for two years.
The Dynamite match was a huge showcase for Vikingo and widely regarded as one of the best in the history of the program.
On April 24, AAA Lucha Libre held a press conference for the upcoming AAA TripleMania XXXI event in Tijuana on July 15.
At the presser, the company announced that El Hijo Del Vikingo will defend the AAA Mega Championship in a rematch against Kenny Omega at the upcoming show.
Vikingo has held the title for over 500 days since winning the gold at TripleMania Regia II on December 4, 2021. The champion prior to Vikingo’s win was Kenny Omega, who held the title for a record 765 days before relinquishing it due to injuries kept him out of action.
Vikingo successfully defended the AAA Mega Championship at AAA TripleMania XXXI Monterrey in a four-way match against Komander, Rich Swann and Swerve Strickland on April 16. He also recently defeated Dralistico to retain the title on the April 22 episode of AEW Rampage.
