Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide booker Konnan has revealed that Kenny Omega was unable to work for the promotion while still negotiating with AEW.
Omega is currently not booked for the AAA Triplemanía XXXI slated for April 16. Interestingly, AEW star Swerve Strickland is set to compete in the four-way main event for the AAA Mega Championship.
It seems odd that Omega will not be part of this match, considering the AEW star hasn’t received a title rematch after relinquishing the gold in 2021, and has since defeated the champion El Hijo Del Vikingo in non-title action.
Speaking on Haus of Wrestling, Konnan noted that Omega was unavailable to him when booking the show, as his future with AEW was uncertain.
Assuming that Omega has now signed a new deal with AEW, Konnan said:
“Well originally, we were gonna bring in (Kenny) Omega, but he was still negotiating with AEW and he wasn’t sure if he was gonna stay or not.
“So, we couldn’t commit. He didn’t want to commit (to our show) until he signed, so that was out the window.
“After that, we asked for a couple people from AEW, they weren’t available and then we asked for another guy and he was hurt, and so basically (who we ended up getting) is Swerve (Strickland), who I have no problem with because he may not have the name value of other people, but he’s an incredible wrestler. I was with him in Lucha Underground.
“I’m assuming (he re-signed). I never really asked him, but there are plans for him in the future so I’m thinking he already signed, you know? He wasn’t sure if he was gonna stay and WWE was talking with him, so we couldn’t get him to commit.”
There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Omega’s next move, following reports in February that Omega is ‘open-minded‘ about the possibility of a WWE run.
