Fans of New Japan Pro Wrestling were rocked by the news that one of their most talismanic superstars, Kenny Omega, had decided not to renew his contract with the promotion, meaning he will no longer work for them come February 1.
Speculation had been running wild for months, and to honest, for years that Kenny would be making a switch to WWE, who allegedly offered him a huge amount of money to join the company in their latest attempt to sign him.
However, it seems that WWE will have to wait a while longer before they’re going to have any chance of signing him and putting him in a team with Jason Jordan to make American Omega.
The other seemingly obvious destination for Kenny is All Elite Wrestling, the brand new promotion launched by his Elite friends Cody and the Young Bucks, and it seems as though that will be his destination.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained that it is his understanding that Kenny Omega will be signing with AEW when his NJPW contract expires.
Note that nothing will be officially announced until February 1, the day after Kenny’s New Japan contract expires, but as is the case with these things, we are sure to hear more as the talks continue.
New Japan are supposedly “desperate” to hold onto Kenny Omega in some way, so may be tempted to work with AEW if he does sign with the new promotion.
AEW are holding their “Double or Nothing” rally in Jacksonville this evening at 10pm GMT 95pm ET) in the car park of West Club at the TIAA Bank Field, home of the Jacksonville Jaguars. It’s expected multiple signings and the upcoming Double or Nothing event will be officially announced. You can follow the event live on our website.
