Top AEW Star Wins Title At NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 NJPW/AEW

Kenny Omega won major NJPW gold during his return to the promotion at Wrestle Kingdom 17.

During the January 4 show, Omega challenged for Will Ospreay’s IWGP US Championship.

Both competitors had big entrances, with Omega walking out to Final Fantasy 7’s One Winged Angel, and Ospreay bringing back his ‘Elevated’ theme.

The bout was hardfought and bloody, with Ospreay cut open during the bout.

While the contest was initially back and forth, things appeared to swing in Omega’s favour towards the end of the bout.

While Ospreay did make a comeback, be ultimately fell to Omega’s One Winged Angel finisher.

Omega pinned Ospreay to win the IWGP US Championship for the second time in his career.

Omega was actually the inaugural champion, winning a single elimination tournament to claim the gold in July 2017.

This IWGP US Championship bout was Omega’s first NJPW match since he lost the IWGP Heavyweight Title to Hiroshi Tanahashi in January 2019.

Omega left NJPW after this bout to help form AEW in the US.

Omega is currently an AEW Executive Vice President, and is prominently featured on AEW TV. He and the Young Bucks are currently engaged in a Best of 7 Series against Death Triangle, with both teams amassing three wins each.

The final bout of the series, for the AEW Trios Championship, will take place on the January 11 edition of Dynamite.
