Konnan Is Proud Of Top NXT Star

Konnan has praised a top NXT star, revealing that he previously invited him to join AAA because he was “stuck in the midcard” at CMLL.

Santos Escobar has been successful since joining NXT, becoming a key player in the brand’s cruiserweight division. Konnan has noted that he’s proud of the former NXT Cruiserweight Champion.

In a live Q&A with AdFreeShows, Konnan recalled inviting Escobar to join AAA while the talent was still with CMLL. Discussing Escobar’s potential, Konnan said:

“Let me tell you a great story about Santos Escobar.  When I debuted in Mexico, my very first match in Mexico City was with his dad, Fantasma.  I’ve known Santos Escobar since he was 8 years old.  His dad used to take him to the gym.  He used to tell him, ‘If you want to be big and strong like Konnan, you have to eat all your food.’

“This is somebody that I knew from when he was a little kid.  He was in CMLL.  He had been there his whole career.  He was stuck in the mid-card. They weren’t doing anything with him.  I called him and said, ‘Why don’t you come to AAA?  I know I can do something with you.  I know I can make you a big star.’  He came over to AAA.  We made him our top heel.  Now he’s in WWE, and I’m so proud of him.”

Escobar won the Interim Cruiserweight Championship Tournament in 2020, defeating Drake Maverick in the finals. At NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver in April, Escobar defeated Jordan Devlin in a ladder match to become the undisputed titleholder.

KUSHIDA pinned Escobar for the gold on the April 13 episode of NXT. According to spoilers from recent tapings, Escobar is set to continue his feud with another champion in NXT.
