NJPW
The 2022 King of Pro-Wrestling Provisional Trophy changed hands during Monday’s (April 25) NJPW Golden Fight Series event.
During the show, Shingo Takagi challenged for Taichi’s trophy in a match contested under 30-count rules, with the first wrestler to earn a cumulative 30-count declared the victor.
Takagi ultimately defeated Taichi for the prize in a close match, with the former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion winning 30-29.
This marks Takagi’s first reign with the provisional prize. After the bout, the new trophy-holder took to the mic to tell fans that he plans to elevate the accolade, as he has done with other titles.
The way the KOPW trophy works is that wrestlers will challenge for the provisional trophy throughout the year, with whoever is holding the trophy at the end of the year crowned the ‘King of Pro Wrestling’ for that year, before the title resets in January.
Toru Yano is the only star to have officially been crowned the ‘King of Pro Wrestling’, holding the trophy at the end of 2020 and 2021.
