A popular WWE star has revealed that he came close to retiring during the COVID-19 global pandemic.
At the the arrival of the pandemic, LA Knight was not signed to WWE, with the popular star only making his WWE NXT debut in early 2021.
Knight has now revealed that things could have been very different for him, had he made the decision to hang up his boots a year before to joining WWE.
Competing for the NWA at the time as Eli Drake, Knight was 38-years-old and like many others at the time, unsure what the future held for him as the world shut down.
Speaking to Interstate 70 Sports Media, Knight reflected on the uncertain period, saying:
“So you know when I’m 38 and the pandemic’s happening, I’m thinking ‘alright, it’s over. Now I gotta figure out what’s the next step? What’s the next thing that I do?’
“Because at this point, the world is falling apart.
“They’re (WWE) not gonna bring me in, especially with my age here.
Instead of stepping away from his goal of making it to WWE, Knight decided to have one final stab at making it happen, he explained:
“I kind of just took that mindset and said, ‘Well, if that’s the thought then screw it, let’s just make one more overture and see what the temperature is.
“I did that. Got that little window of opportunity. I pushed the hell on and here we are.
“It’s crazy that I even made that move. I didn’t think it was a possibility.
“I didn’t think it was gonna happen. But it did. And I’m glad it did.”
Knight’s decision appears to have paid off, although it came with some bumps along the road, particularly his early days on the main roster as Max Dupri of the Maximum Male Models faction.
Thankfully the Mega Star’s persistence once again shone through and he managed to reclaim his NXT character LA Knight.
Knight is set to take on The Miz in only his second-ever singles match at a WWE Premium Live Event at Payback on September 2.
