Latest On WWE & Universal Title Match Plans For WrestleMania 38

Here’s how the events of WWE Day 1 have affected plans for the WWE and Universal Championship matches for WrestleMania 38.

During the January 1 show, Brock Lesnar won a five-way bout to claim the WWE Championship. The Beast was originally scheduled to challenge for Roman Reigns’ Universal Title, however Reigns tested positive for COVID-19 on the day of the event.

Following WWE Day 1, it was reported that WrestleMania 38 plans for Reigns and Lesnar have not changed, leading to speculation that the two titleholders will do battle in a Champion vs Champion bout during the April 2-3 event.

As per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the original plans for the WWE Championship and Universal Title haven’t changed. Pointing out that the road to WrestleMania is now a little more convoluted, Meltzer said:

“Drew (McIntyre) will find out I presume this week how serious it is. He would be the guy (most likely to face Reigns at Royal Rumble), but he may not be available. I know that they’ve got everything worked out between now and WrestleMania. Everything is worked out. All the original plans, there were some changes obviously because the Lesnar and Roman Reigns match from Saturday didn’t happen, but they’ve got their new twists and turns, and the final destination, which is presumably Lesnar and Roman Reigns, is still on.

“Whatever the plan was for the WWE Championship match – I don’t know what it was – but they’re gonna get there, and that’s also still on. So the WrestleMania matches are the same, but the plans on how to get there obviously have changed.”

A now-deleted graphic appeared to reveal the initial plan for the WWE Championship at Day 1, before Lesnar’s addition to the title bout.

Lesnar is set to defend his gold against Bobby Lashley at Royal Rumble later this month.
