WWE SmackDown Live Results – October 23, 2018

03:03am

That was a completely missable episode of SmackDown, something I don’t remember saying for quite a while.

It was largely centered around the World Cup tournament, something I didn’t care about beforehand, and still don’t now.

Bit of a naff show, really. Not bad, just not particularly good.

I’ll leave you with this video of Jeff Hardy being stupid:

03:01am

In a match made up of Randy being a sadistic, horrible man and Jeff Hardy being a bit of a melon and doing silly things like missing Swanton Bombs on the outside because HE DOESN’T DO THEM ANYMORE BECAUSE THEY HURT HIM SO MUCH, it’s the ‘Viper’ who picks up the win in the main event following an RKO.

02:58am

This.

02:47am

Shane McMahon comes to the ring, praises Evolution, and proceeds to hype up the WWE World Cup to determine the best in the world SHUT UP FOR GOD’S SAKE at Crown Jewel.

The crowd had a similar reaction to me, and decided to chant “CM Punk,” to which Shane responded “I don’t believe he’s in the tournament.”

Not awkward at all.

Main event is up next.

02:40am

Up next, it’s the main event, as two World Cup participants go head-to-head when the ‘Viper’ Randy Orton takes on the ‘Charismatic Enigma’ Jeff Hardy.

02:33am

Oh boy, the IIconics are here. Hooray.

And now Lana’s here too.

And Carmella. She does a dance break.

Now Zelina Vega’s here and they’re all having a big barney.

Now, how does it go… All the SmackDown women etc. etc. etc.

02:24am

In a fairly entertaining match that was largely dominated by the bigger Miz, Rey Mysterio picks up his second win in as many weeks and builds momentum towards next week’s World Cup.

Up next, it’s Naomi and Asuka vs. Absolution because apparently that’s supposed to make us care about the Evolution Battle Royal.

02:17am

I didn’t notice this at the time.

A fantastic touch. Well played.

02:12am

We are back after the commercial break, and the match is indeed underway!

Miz v Mysterio. This could be very good.

02:09am

Miz TV consisted of Miz essentially telling Rey and everybody else that he is going to win the World Cup at Crown Jewel and leave Rey disappointed in his return.

Rey does admit he’s disappointed, but only because he thought he was booked for Truth TV, not Miz TV.

It doesn’t take long for things to blow over and a brawl to ensue, with Miz narrowly escaping a 619.

It looks as if we may get this match after the break.

01:55am

Oh.

That was disappointing.

After a bit of tomfoolery involving Lana on the outside, Rusev won in about two minutes.

As much as I love Rusev, Aiden deserves better than that.

It is announced that we’ll see Randy Orton vs. Jeff Hardy later tonight, and up next it’s Miz TV with guest Rey Mysterio!

01:49am

Footage is shown of the brawl that the Performance Center that was tweeted out on the NXT Twitter account a few days ago, which saw Charlotte – who was giving the trainees advice – interrupted by Evolution and SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch, and after a bit of verbal back-and-forth, things got physical, because of course they did.

In fairness, that was a really creative segment. Good stuff.

Up next, it’s Rusev vs. Aiden English which is definitely not going to end in a DQ or roll-up.

01:45am

One of the cringiest things I have ever seen.

01:33am

Much like last week, miscommunication costs the Crown Jewel opponents and the Usos walk away with the victory after a solid match.

Styles went for a Phenomenal Forearm, but one of the Usos dodged and the WWE Champion very nearly struck Bryan. He managed to stop himself, but just seconds later accidentally nailed the ‘”Yes” Man’ with a Pele Kick, which was swiftly followed by an Uso Superkick, splash, and the 1-2-3.

01:22am

We take a look back at the emotional opening to Raw last night, which saw Roman Reigns announce he is battling leukemia, and relinquish the Universal Championship.

Once again, we at WrestleTalk send our prayers and wishes to Joe Anoa’i and his family.

The Usos vs. Styles & Bryan is about to kick off.

01:15am

Right then.

So basically, Show hit Kofi with three consecutive Chokeslams, before the rest of New Day and the Bar stormed the ring, resulting in a no contest.

The Bar and Big Show didn’t seem to care though, as they just completely destroy the former champions. I think I counted about 47 Chokeslams in total.

Up next, it’s Daniel Bryan & AJ Styles vs. The Usos, in a rematch from last week.

01:11am

After a bit of tomfoolery and deciding who’s actually going to have a match tonight, we end up with Kofi Kingston vs. Big Show.

Just in case you were scared you’d stepped inside a phantom time machine, it is 2018.

01:05am

SmackDown opens with former WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champions the New Day, who lost the titles last week at SmackDown 1000 when Big Show turned heel for the 6,874th time to assist the Bar to victory.

Will we get an explanation from Show tonight?

It has also just been confirmed that at Crown Jewel, the Bar will defend against New Day. So Crown Jewel has not been canceled yet, for anyone wondering.

Off the back of one of the most emotional episodes of Raw for a very, very long time, tonight is the SmackDown go-home show for this Sunday’s Evolution pay-per-view.

Before tonight’s show begins, check out our full preview, but here’s a brief rundown of what’s in store tonight:

  • The final build for Sunday’s Last Woman Standing match between Women’s Champion Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair
  • Mandy Rose vs. Naomi is now Absolution vs. Naomi & Asuka because WWE isn’t even pretending to care about the Evolution Battle Royal, or Asuka for that matter
  • Rusev vs. Aiden English which definitely won’t end in a DQ or roll-up
  • The Usos vs. Daniel Bryan & AJ Styles because Crown Jewel is apparently happening… for now… it seems
  • Rey Mysterio on Miz TV
  • Big Show probably turns babyface again
