Welcome to WrestleTalk’s live coverage of AEW Dynamite! As we wind down the year, we have another stacked episode. Here is what has been announced for the show:
- AEW World Tag Team Championship Match – SoCal Uncensored (c) vs. The Young Bucks
- Ten Minute Time Limit – Jungle Boy vs. Chris Jericho
- The Butcher & The Blade vs. Cody & Darby Allin
- AEW Womens Championship Number One Contender Match – Kris Statlander vs. Britt Baker
- Lucha Bros vs Kenny Omega & Hangman Page
It is not every week that we get a championship match on television so it should definitely be worth watching tonight.
AEW World Tag Team Championship Match - SoCal Uncensored def. The Young Bucks
It seems like it would impossible for these two teams to have a bad match with one another. They have had a large number of matches together from their days in Ring of Honor.
Much of the match was a back and forth display of tag team moves. Nick Jackson is incredible and this was a good night for him. Finally, Kazarian hit Nick Jackson with a DDT on the apron before they hit the SCU Later on Matt for the pin.
I get what they are trying to do here but in my opinion SCU was not the team to be the inaugural AEW Tag Team Champions and to see the Young Bucks lose again is just baffling to me.
After the match, the Creepers surrounded the ring and The Dark Order came onto the stage. The Creepers attacked both teams and Kenny Omega and Cody and Dustin Rhodes ran in to help but were beaten down. The jobber team of John Silver and Alex Reynolds were both among the Creepers and they put on masks as the show went off the air.
They have been doing a good job to make the Dark Order a bigger team and it looks like they will be doing more with them in the New Year. That being said, what ever happened to Nakazawa and PAC? Did Omega just give up looking for them? Would have been nice to get an answer to that one. Well, I guess we will find out next year.
Shawn Spears & Tully Blanchard Promo
Shawn Spears is looking for a tag team partner. That’s about it. Spears has not blown me away in the last few months but at least finding him a role in the tag division is something new for him to do.
AEW Women's Championship Number One Contender’s Match - Kris Statlander def. Britt Baker
Kris Statlander got the win over Britt Baker by hitting a piledriver after fighting out of the Lockjaw. This match was fine but not terribly exciting. They are really playing up Kris Statlander being an alien and it is really stupid.
She kept touching her nose and touching Baker’s nose as the announcers told us that this is her way of communicating. After the match, Brandi Rhodes came out to get an answer from Statlander about joining the Nightmare Collective.
Statlander wagged her finger in Brandi’s face as a rejection and Brandi jumped her when she turned her back on her.
By the end I was really hating this. The alien thing is really stupid and two Brandi Rhodes segments on one show is far too much and that is coming from someone who loves Brandi Rhodes to death. This Nightmare Collective shtick is just bad.
SCU + Lucha Bros Promo
SoCal Uncensored began talking about how the Young Bucks are the tag team of the decade but they are the tag team of the moment because they are the AEW World Tag Team Champions.
The Lucha Bros. came into the shot and Pentagon Jr. was showing clips of Christopher Daniels botched Arabian Press. Kazarian told Daniels to say he can still go but Daniels just walked off looking sad. I do not like seeing people be sad.
Chris Jericho Promo
Chris Jericho and Tony Schiavone got into it when Tony tried to tell Jericho that he said Jungle Boy couldn’t last ten minutes with him and then he did.
Jericho then changed subjects and said that his offer to Jon Moxley to join the Inner Circle still stands. He says that he doesn’t want to rush Mox but he will have something very special in store for him come New Years Day.
Chris Jericho DRAW Jungle Boy
Chris Jericho had the match won about two minutes in but chose not to win it. Jericho hit two Codebreakers but kept choosing to not win the match. Jungle Boy got the momentum back by hitting a series of dives and a springboard DDT.
Jake Hager and the Jurassic Express were ejected from ringside after getting into it with one another and from there it was a very back and forth match. Jungle Boy hit some unique offence and hit Jericho with his own Lionsault.
Jericho finally got the upper hand with a powerbomb. Jericho put Jungle Boy in the Liontamer for the last 90 seconds of the match. Jungle Boy held on for the time limit draw but Jericho demanded another five minutes be added to the match.
They traded strikes and Jungle Boy hit a few roll-ups but Jericho took his belt and left. There was no finish to this extra five minute period as Jungle Boy left the ring soon after. Jericho then went back to the ring to throw a tantrum during the commercial break. I have no idea what the finish was supposed to be here. They were doing something really cool and then just abruptly stopped.
Awesome Kong def. Miranda Alizae
This match went about a minute. Awesome Kong just squashed this poor girl and beat her with the Implant Buster (or whatever they’re calling it in AEW).
After the match, Brandi Rhodes and her crew cut off a piece of the fallen woman’s hair and added it to their collection.
If this Brandi Rhodes stuff has to be on the show, I’m happy that it would be short.
Jungle Boy video package
They then showed a video package of Jungle Boy training for his match with Chris Jericho. It was all clips of him in the gym or outside running with clips of Jericho’s promo playing over them.
It wasn’t really anything special but my goodness is Jungle Boy in incredible shape. The fact that he is a year younger than me makes me very impressed and a little sad.
Cody & Darby Allin def. The Butcher & The Blade w/ The Bunny
They let us know that if Darby Allin and Cody win this match then Allin wants a rematch of their draw from Fyter Fest.
Darby Allin was extremely over to this crowd. It is becoming more and more apparent that he is going to be a very big star in this promotion. He was the one the crowd was chanting for and he got a big hot tag.
Cody and Darby hit stereo dives to take down The Butcher and The Blade. Darby hit the Coffin Drop on The Butcher to take him out of the match for good as Cody hit the newly dubbed Cody Cutter (his top rope OsCutter) on The Blade for the win.
This was a good match but once this short program with Cody runs its course I think the Butcher and the Blade will have a hard time connecting with this audience. They haven’t stuck out very much since their debut.
Lucha Bros. def. Kenny Omega & Hangman Page
The storyline here is clearly that Hangman Page is headed towards a heel turn or a more permanent split from The Elite. Its a subtle build thus far as Page and Kenny Omega have been unable to get on the same page.
The match took a while to get going, due in large part to a lengthy comedy spot between Page and Pentagon Jr.. The match went just under 20 minutes and some of the match was extremely sharp and some of it was sloppy.
The finish came when Omega held Pentagon in place for the Buckshot Lariat but when Pentagon ducked, Omega got hit. After disposing of Page, the Lucha Bros. hit a combo stomp-package pildriver on Omega for the win.
The post-match saw Omega and Page jaw jacking and shoving each other before PAC came on the screen. PAC told Omega that it is time to remind him what he is capable of. PAC walks through the backstage area to find Michael Nakazawa. He closes the door on him and Nakazawa as Omega runs to stop them. By the time Omega got there, PAC and Nakazawa were gone and the Lucha Bros. jumped him. Page helped Omega fight them off.
It is pretty clear that this was by no means the turn for Hangman Page but the turn is getting closer. The match was pretty slow in some parts but overall this was a very good opening segment.
Welcome to our live coverage of AEW Dynamite! With a lot on the light tonight, this is an episode to pay attention to.
