Welcome to day three of WrestleTalk.com’s WrestleMania Weekend coverage. In this live blog I will be covering all-female group SHIMMER’s annual WrestleMania Weekend pay-per-view SHIMMER 113. With a stacked roster featuring some of the best women’s wrestlers in the world, this promises to be a fun little show. Remember we will also have live coverage of WrestleCon US vs. The World courtesy of Andy Datson elsewhere on the site at the same time.

And that’s it for SHIMMER 113, a consistent show with one real stand-out match between Tessa Blanchard and Dr. Britt Baker. Of the shows I have seen this week, this is my top five matches thus far:

1. Minoru Suzuki vs. Josh Barnett
2. Will Ospreay vs. Bandido
3. Davey Boy Smith Jr. vs. Killer Kross
4. Tessa Blanchard vs. Dr. Britt Baker
5. Hideki Suzuki vs. Jonathan Gresham

I hear David Starr vs. Lucky Kid on wXw was an absolute banger too. Lots of great wrestling around outside of WWE this week folks, make sure you check some of it out.

Dust vs. Samantha Heights

This was for Dust’s Heart Of SHIMMER Championship. I have not seen her before. I have seen Heights, who impressed me last night in a wild eight-person tag match on WrestleCon’s Mark Hitchcock Memorial Supershow.

They pulled out all the stops here, with big bumps on the apron, on the outside, into the buckles and in the ring. It could not hold a candle to Blanchard and Baker but they certainly tried hard and came close.

Despite Dust kicking out of the Bangarang, Heights was the last woman standing. She spiked Dust again to win the match and capture the Heart Of SHIMMER Championship. Keep an eye out for Heights, she has a ton of potential. 2019 could be a big year for her.

Ashley Vox, Delmi Exo, Solo Darling & Kris Wolf def. Charli Evans, Jessica Troy, Zoe Lucas & Steph De Lander

And eight-woman scramble earlier on and now and eight-woman tag match? Seems a bit much. I guess when there is so much talent in town it makes sense to try to get them all on the card. Not great for the budget though, I expect.

Kris Wolf – who is retiring shortly – was by far the most over person in the match, and indeed one of the most over on the entire show.  She was also the star of this match, which was better structured as a wrestling match than the crash-bang-wallop eight-way earlier. Well, until it all inevitably broke down.

Even so, as we are over two hours into the show, this was very long for its position on the card.

As you might expect, Wolf scored the win in her final SHIMMER match and was given an emotional send off from her partners after the bout.

Tessa Blanchard def. Dr. Britt Baker

It’s Impact Wrestling vs. AEW, although I would not be surprised in the slightest to see Blanchard turn up in AEW in the future. Blanchard was one of the most improved performers in all of wrestling in 2018 and became the ace of Impact’s knockouts division.

This was a very good match, fought at a blisteringly fast pace. Both looked a class apart from many of the others on the show – and that is not meant to disrespect anyone else, they are just both really good.

Blanchard was the aggressor, as you might expect, taking control of the match after a horrible looking (in a good way) back senton from the top that appeared to wind Baker. Blanchard focused on targeting Baker’s core after that, ruthlessly drilling her with big move after big move for close near falls.

Baker fought back, almost beating Tessa with her own move. Baker locked in a Rings of Saturn but Tessa impressively powered out then connected with a Buzzsaw DDT for the win. Probably the match of the night thus far.

Cheerleader Melissa & Mercedes Martinez def. Thunder Rosa & Holidead

Despite getting stretchered out of the building on a SHIMMER card less than a week ago, Mercedes Martinez is back in action. Much credit to her for being able to bounce back so quickly.

She and Cheerleader Melissa put their SHIMMER tag belts on the line in this. Both of them have been around the scene for many years – there are few in women’s wrestling with their level of experience.

The Twisted Sisters (Holidead and Thunder Rosa) are a regular tandem and one of the best women’s teams around. Working together regularly has allowed them to develop a consistency.

The match was pretty good. Certainly a step up from the likes of the IIconics or Nia Jax and Tamina, although I realise I am setting the bar fairly low there.

There was a scary moment when a combo powerbomb / neckbreak combo from the champs to Holidead folded her up like an accordion and another when a Canadian Destroyer didn’t quite go right, but for the most part it was a decent.

Shenanigans allowed Melissa to drill Rosa onto the tag title belt then a combo super curb stomp finished off the challengers.

Shazza McKenzie def. Su Yung

This was good. It was different to everything else on the show in that it was more of a rough and tumble fight than a wrestling match in places.

Yung is one of the most underrated wrestlers in the world, able to marry her character and moveset in a way that few ever fully manage to grasp. McKenzie as a character is the polar opposite of Yung, which made for a nice dynamic.

Shazza scored the perhaps slightly surprising win, going over clean via pinfall following Shztastic off the top. We are at the halfway point.

Su Yung vs. Shazza McKenzie

I am sure everyone reading is familiar with Su Yung, who has been catapulted into the spotlight over the past year thanks to her run in Impact Wrestling. Recently she murdered AEW-bound Allie on an episode of Impact, which leads to the crowd here chanting “You killed Allie”. Indeed. If you have not seen the ludicrous but brilliant skit yet, check it out below:

Allysin Kay def. Kris Stadtlander

Kris Stadtlander is less than two years into her career but is starting to really make a name for herself on the women’s circuit. She has already had a busy few days this week. This was her SHIMMER debut.

Kay has been around for far longer, debuting back in 2008. She competed in last year’s MYC, losing in the first round to Mia Yim.

Both women are very solid workers and they had a very good back and forth match. Stadtlander looked excellent, combing power moves with high flying, brawling and some comedy (she licked Kay’s fingers then made her give herself a double wet willie).

Like others on this show, the striking could be a lot better though. Or maybe I have been condition to expect something else after watching last night’s incredible Bloodsport show.

Anyway, the veteran Kay wins it with her “Big D”. Really good match and another standout performance from Stadtlander, who is going to be a major player in women’s wrestling.

Scramble madness

This was a scramble match fought under one-fall lucha tag rules. The participants: Veda Scott, Brittany Blake, Brandi Lauren, Allie Recks, Hyan, Shotzi Blackheart, Indi Hartwell and Leva Bates (aka Blue Pants in NXT) – who was dressed as Britney Spears from the ‘Oops . . . I Did It Again’ music video. She got really over on her entrance by dancing and singing along to the track. Easy crowd.

The ring announcer pops me by announcing Bates as “from the 90s, apparently” to which Bates responds, “It’s Britney, bitch!”. Excellent.

The match had been advertised as a six-way but I guess they changed something and added two women. Because if less is more then more must be even more, right?

It’s exactly what you would expect. Lots of spots, lots of dives, lots of pre-planned my-turn your-turn sequences and nothing that particularly registered. I am sure the “everything is awesome” brigade enjoyed it but it was not a good match.

Shotzi Blackheart was the stand out, as she tends to be when she wrestles. Her stuff looked crisp and impactful.

Hyan was the surprise winner, ‘hitting’ a 450 knee drop (that missed by a mile) on Allie Recks to win.

Nicole Savoy def. Hiroyo Matsumoto

Hiroyo Matsumoto is one of the top female wrestlers in the world. You might remember her from WWE’s Mae Young Classic, where she beat Rachael Evers in the first round then lost to eventual winner Toni Storm. Nicole Savoy is pretty damn good as well. This was for the SHIMMER Championship, which is certainly one way to kick things off with a bang.

The lighting is very dark but it looks unique and the crowd is full and hot for this. Not bad for 11am on a Friday morning!

They traded holds for a while early on before Matsumoto took over on the outside. Matsumoto lit up Savoy with hard chops, to which Savoy responded with some of her own that barely registered. Savoy got back into it with a powerslam and suplex before going for an armbar and then a Fujjiwara arm bar into a triangle. Her submission game is really good.

So it Matsumoto’s though. She escaped the hold and locked on a Boston crab then hit a Vader bomb style double knees for a close near fall. They traded strikes – something Savoy needs to work on because she was throwing very weak shots – before going back to the submission attempts.

It fell apart briefly when Savoy twice forgot a spot as Matsumoto was charging at her on the ropes, leading to her standing there awkwardly. The crowd noticed. She pulled it back with a couple of vicious German suplexes and a Dragon suplex for the win. Sort of. Matsumoto looked like she had kicked out but the bell sounded anyway.

Savoy looked like she was hurt afterwards, lying on the mat for a long time and clearly struggling with something. I am not sure what move it was that hurt. She made it to her feet afterwards at least but looked very dazed. She might have been knocked out. Hopefully it is nothing too serious.

The promotion released the card yesterday via Twitter, which they noted was subject to change. 8 matches . . . Or less than HALF of what will be on WrestleMania.

Not quite started yet

I am not exactly sure what is going on here. They are showing lots of EVOLVE footage but nothing from SHIMMER. It’s all part of the same WWN family so I guess they are just using what they have to kill time prior to the event starting. Maybe it is delayed, I am not sure. It was supposed to start at 11am EST / 4pm UK
