Final thoughts

I have no idea what just happened in the last five hours of my life.

I am going to go to sleep, wake up, and see if this article and this show even exists.

Shane McMahon won the World Cup and is now the “best in the world,” Brock Lesnar is the Universal Champion AGAIN, and… that main event also happened.

Deary, deary me.

Thanks for following along with our live coverage of the show, let us know what you thought of the action by joining our Discord server or connecting with us on Twitter.

I leave you with this:

D-Generation X def. The Brothers of Destruction

That was very, very tough to get through.

It started as a fun, pantomime of a match, with all four men showcasing their signature moves, turning back the years, and the crowd popping for pretty much everything.

Things got taken outside of the ring, and that’s when it all started to go downhill. ‘Taker attempted a Tombstone on HBK through the announcers’ table, but Trips managed to pull his partner to safety.

Kane catches HHH though, and hits him with a Chokeslam through the table, via which the ‘Game’ seemingly injured his arm and was out of the match for an extended period of time.

This left Shawn working alone for a good few minutes, and he basically just got beaten down by the Undertaker for what seemed like hours.

But then the ‘Heartbreak Kid’ somehow breaks out a Moonsault to the outside, which also looked like a very, very nasty landing.

Triple H finally managed to get back into the ring after this, and with the Brothers of Destruction in position for a double Tombstone, Michaels stook his thumb in Kane’s eye, allowing Triple H to capitalize with a Pedigree on the ‘Big Red Machine’ for the win.

D-Generation X vs. The Brothers of Destruction

It’s the blockbuster tag team main event, as a reuniting DX take on the Brothers of Destruction for the first time ever!

Shane McMahon def. Dolph Ziggler – World Cup Final

After a two minute match, Shane hits the Coast-to-Coast on Ziggler, and wins the World Cup.

Shane McMahon is “the best in world.”

What even is wrestling?

Shane McMahon vs. Dolph Ziggler – World Cup Final

Right then.

So Miz pulled up lame before the match even started, and despite being adamant that he could compete, he couldn’t even stand with the help of the barricade.

The ref declared that Ziggler had won by forfeit, to which Shane McMahon was rather angry and… decided to put himself in the match instead.

Yay.

Corbin has also been sent backstage.

The crowd are chanting “this is awesome!”

Can’t say I agree with that particular assessment.

The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler – World Cup Final

It’s time for a World Cup final that I doubt many would have predicted, as SmackDown‘s Miz takes on Raw‘s Dolph Ziggler.

Both Baron Corbin and Shane McMahon are ringside here, and remember, if Miz loses, he will be fired from SmackDown.

Interesting development here, the ref is ordering McIntyre backstage. Drew is the reason Ziggler defeated Rollins so this is a seemingly fair call from the ref.

Brock Lesnar def. Braun Strowman – Universal Championship

Brock Lesnar is the new Universal Champion.

This match was literally just F5s.

Corbin attacked Braun with the belt before the match even started, Brock hit an F5, but Strowman kicked out.

And then Brock hit another F5. Strowman kicked out.

And then again.

The ‘Beast’ then hits an F5 to outside the ring, but Braun manages to get back in at the ref’s count of nine.

And then a fifth F5 sealed the end, and Lesnar is the first two-time Universal Champion.

Oh.

Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman – Universal Championship

It’s time for the two behemoths to clash over the vacant Universal Championship!

And Baron Corbin is at ringside for some reason.

I hope he interjects, adds himself to the match, and wins.

AJ Styles (c) def. Samoa Joe – WWE Championship

Well the crowd ruined that for me really. They spent most of the match chanting for CM Punk. Id that wasn’t odd enough, they then started chanting Sami Zayn. Odd.

Nonetheless, Styles focused much of his offense on Joe’s injured left knee, that has been a target ever since Super Show-Down.

At one point towards the end, Joe looked like he was about to pick up the title with a Coquina Clutch, but that was countered by AJ with an attack on Joe’s knee.

AJ wins with the Phenomenal Forearm, and that wasn’t a great match really. It felt weird. But like I touched on, maybe it would have seemed better in front of a crowd that actually cared and was paying attention.

AJ Styles (c) vs. Samoa Joe – WWE Championship

Up next, it’s the WWE Championship match between AJ Styles and Samoa Joe!

Joe replaced Daniel Bryan this past Tuesday on SmackDown to reignite this rivalry that had unfolded over the past few months.

Dolph Ziggler def. Seth Rollins – World Cup Final

This was the best match of the World Cup so far, but I am very surprised at the result.

Ziggler sustained offense for the most part, working over Rollins, but, as always, Rollins constantly showed bursts of a comeback.

Both men kicked out of each other’s signature moves, with Dolph escaping the King’s Landing knee and Rollins getting out of the ZigZag.

The climax came when Seth had gone to the top rope for a Frog Splash, and the ref was distracted attending to Ziggler. Drew McIntyre, who Seth had just taken out with a Suicide Dive, pushed the IC Champion off the top rope, Ziggler landing a Superkick for the win.

This sets up a very intriguing and surprising World Cup final between The Miz and Dolph Ziggler.

Seth Rollins vs. Dolph Ziggler – World Cup Semi Final

It’s the second semi final, as the ‘Architect’ faces Dolph Ziggler, with the winner advancing to take on The Miz for the World Cup trophy!

The Miz def. Rey Mysterio – World Cup Semi Final

This match was heavily focused around Miz targeting his offense on Rey’s abdominal region after Orton’s attack earlier.

In typical Mysterio fashion though, he fights back, even kicking out of the Skull Crushing Finale.

Rey attempts the same roll-up that beat Orton, Miz kicks out, but the ‘Ultimate Underdog’ immediately capitalizes with a 619.

Miz manages to block the Splash though, and covers Rey to pick up the win.

The ‘A-Lister’ will face either Seth Rollins or Dolph Ziggler in the World Cup final!

The Miz vs. Rey Mysterio – World Cup Semi Final

Up next, it’s the SmackDown World Cup semi final, as The Miz takes on Mysterio.

Remember Mysterio is still wounded from Randy Orton’s post-match beatdown earlier in the show.

The Bar (c) def. New Day – SmackDown Tag Team Championships

New Day started this match well, but before long the Bar were very much on top, using Big Show on the outside and distracting the ref to gain an advantage.

After a lengthy periof of Kofi taking offense, a Big E hot tag looked to lead the New Day to a swing in momentum.

Cesaro breaks up a pin from a unique double team move from Kofi and E, and a Trouble in Paradise clears Cesaro out the ring, and it’s beginning to look like the title was set to change hands.

However, as the ref got caught up in the corner, Big Show delivered a punch to Big E, forcing New Day’s big man into a Brogue Kick, and the Bar retain the titles.

The Bar (c) vs. New Day – SmackDown Tag Team Championships

After the culmination of the World Cup quarter finals, up next we have the Bar defending the SmackDown Tag Titles against New Day.

New Day made their entrance on a magic carpet platform thingy… because… of course they did.

But forget your magic carpet platform thingies, the Bar have got Big Show in their corner.

Dolph Ziggler def. Kurt Angle – World Cup Quarter Final

This was probably the most ‘dramatic’ of the quarter finals in terms of nearfalls.

Dolph was on top early for this one, but Angle managed to fight back with some vintage offense.

This led to an Angle Slam, which I thought spelled the end, but Ziggler managed to get out at two.

Ziggler soon tried to roll-up Angle to score the win, but the Hall of Famer turned things round into an Ankle Lock. Ziggler managed to escape after a short while, and hit the ZigZag for the win.

The World Cup semi finals are:

Kurt Angle vs. Dolph Ziggler – World Cup Quarter Final

The last quarter final is up next, as Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle takes on Dolph Ziggler.

Ziggler has the important advantage of having a really big scary Scotsman named Drew McIntyre in his corner tonight.

Seth Rollins def. Bobby Lashley – World Cup Quarter Final

These quarter finals really are coming and going thick and fast here.

Lashley dominated for pretty much the entire match, using his power advantage to essentially batter the ‘Architect.’

Rollins fought back with a couple of Suicide Dives but couldn’t really capitalize.

A highlight of this match for me was Michael Cole’s astute observation:

“It’s night time here at Crown Jewel, and Lio Rush has sunglasses on.”

And before I knew it, Rollins hit Lashley with a Stomp OUTTA NOWHERE to qualify for the Raw semi final. He will face either Kurt Angle or Dolph Ziggler.

Seth Rollins vs. Bobby Lashley – World Cup Quarter Final

Up next, we kick off the Raw half of the World Cup bracket with Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins taking on Bobby LASHLEY LASHLEY LASHLEY LASHLEY LASHLEY. You may be happy to know that Rush doesn’t have a mic tonight. Oh wait, actually he does. Sorry for getting your hopes up.

One interesting note though, Rollins doesn’t have his Raw Tag Title with him. Despite the two falling out, he and Dean Ambrose are technically still the champs.

The winner of this one will go on to face either Kurt Angle or Dolph Ziggler in the Raw semi final.

The Miz def. Jeff Hardy – World Cup Quarter Final

In another relatively shot match, it’s The Miz who picks up the win and will face Mysterio in the semi final.

The bout was all Miz for the first few minutes, but Hardy managed to get back into things by countering a third Miz corner dropkick.

After a burst from Hardy, Miz rolls out of the way of an imminent Swanton Bomb, before attempting a roll-up win, but the ref notices Miz illegally using the ropes for leverage.

Hardy tries to capitalize on Miz arguing with the ref with a Twist of Fate, but the ‘A-Lister’ counters into a Skull Crushing Finale for the win.

Jeff Hardy vs. The Miz – World Cup Quarter Final

We continue the World Cup with the second and last SmackDown quarter final, as Jeff Hardy takes on The Miz.

Miz seemed very confident about going all the way in a pre-match backstage interview with Byron Saxton.

The winner of this one will face Mysterio in the semis.

Rey Mysterio def. Randy Orton – World Cup Quarter Final

In a fun but short match, Rey Mysterio is the first man that advances through to the semi final of the WWE World Cup, by defeating Randy Orton.

At one point early in the match, Orton tried to take Rey’s mask, in line with his renewed 2009-esque sadistic heel attitude.

The ‘Viper’ managed to counter a 619 with Hangman DDT, before setting up for an RKO towards the conclusion.

Mysterio reversed the RKO though, rolling through to pick up the shock win.

After the match, Orton hit Rey with an RKO before he could even celebrate, before continuing a post-match beatdown at ringside.

Mysterio will face either The Miz or Jeff Hardy in the SmackDown semi final.

Rey Mysterio vs. Randy Orton – World Cup Quarter Final

After Hogan welcomes us to the show, brother, we’re kicking things off with World Cup action, as Rey Mysterio goes one-on-one with Randy Orton in the SmackDown half of the bracket.

It’s the Hulkster, brother!

Ring announcer Greg Hamilton opens Crown Jewel by introducing the show’s host, WWE Hall of Famer, the ‘Immortal’ Hulk Hogan, making his first on-screen WWE appearance since 2015.

Shinsuke Nakamura (c) def. Rusev – United States Championship

The Saudi live crowd were very much behind Rusev here, with loud chants of “Rusev Day” throughout the match.

The Bulgarian was on top for the majority of the match, and managed to dodge a Kinshasa and shortly after smashed Nakamura with a Machka Kick as the ‘Artist’ jumped from the top rope. This led to a great two-count kickout from Nakamura.

Rusev countered yet another Kinshasa, this time with a Drop Toe Hold into an Accolade.

After being locked in the Accolade for some time, Nakamura looked set to reach the ropes, but Rusev dragged him back to lock it back in in the center of the ring. Nakamura – the absolute cheeky man – delivered a low blow via headbutt to Rusev, and capitalized with a Kinshasa to retain his title.

Something tells me this isn’t the last time we’ll see these two square off. A pretty enjoyable match for a pre-show opener.

Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. Rusev – United States Championship

It’s time for the first live action of the night, as Shinsuke Nakamura defends his United States Championship against Rusev!

Our commentary team for tonight looks to be Michael Cole, Corey Graves, and as was reported earlier this week, Renee Young.

Kickoff show underway

The WWE Crown Jewel Kickoff show has begun!

Our host Jonathon Coachman is joined by panelists David Otunga and WWE Hall of Famer Booker T to preview tonight’s action.

Remember, we’ve also got Shinsuke Nakamura defending the US Title against Rusev on the Kickoff show within the next hour!

Preview

One of the most controversial WWE events in memory is upon us as Crown Jewel comes to us live from the Saudi Arabian capital city of Riyadh.

There has been plenty of unrest surrounding the show given the circumstances in the Middle East nation at present, and many fans are refusing to watch the show, with major stars Daniel Bryan and John Cena going as far as pulling out and not traveling to the event.

This has led to a couple of changes to the initial planned card. Bobby Lashley has replaced Cena in the World Cup tournament, and Samoa Joe is AJ Styles’ new opponent for the WWE Championship.

We will be providing live coverage from the start of the pre-show to the very end of the show, so bookmark this page and come back at 11am ET/3pm GMT to follow along with match-by-match results!

Here’s what the card looks like:

  • Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. Rusev – United States Championship – Kickoff show
  • The Bar (c) vs. New Day – SmackDown Tag Team Championships
  • AJ Styles (c) vs. Samoa Joe – WWE Championship
  • Eight-man World Cup tournament – full bracket HERE
  • DX vs. Brothers of Destruction
  • Braun Strowman vs. Brock Lesnar – vacant Universal Championship

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, Hulk Hogan is the “host” of the Crown Jewel event, making his first on-screen WWE appearance since the summer of 2015. Wowzers.
