Dakota Kai has opened up about her final few months in NXT, and how she believed her career “hit a wall” before leaving the brand.
Kai was released by WWE on April 29, 2022, before returning at this year’s SummerSlam with Bayley and Iyo Sky (formerly NXT’s Io Shirai) as part of new stable Damage CTRL.
During her over 4 years as part of the brand, Dakota accumulated two NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship reigns, which lasted for a combined three days and one hour, with her final NXT match seeing her come up short against NXT Women’s Champion Mandy Rose, seemingly sealing her fate of never capturing the big one on the brand.
Speaking on Ryan Satin’s podcast Out of Character, Kai talked about her experiences in the black and gold and beyond, noting that she felt like she hit a wall on the show.
She said:
“I definitely was at a point where I hit a wall I guess. I had that character that sort of changed and was dealing with that for a year and seeing where I could take it. But I think I definitely was at a point in NXT where there wasn’t really anything further that I could do.
“I’ve had a lot of shots at the NXT Women’s Championship. I was in multiple tag teams. I was with a lot of different people, and I loved all my experiences.”
Kai and SKY are currently Women’s Tag Team Champions, after defeating former title holders Aliyah and Raquel Rodriguez on the September 12 episode of WWE Raw. They are set to defend the titles against Shotzi and Raquel Rodriguez on this week’s episode of SmackDown.
