Major Scrapped Plans For New WWE Championship At WrestleMania 39 WWE

Major scrapped plans appear to have been revealed for a new WWE Championship that was to be created for WrestleMania 39.

As we all know by now, WWE was hoping The Rock would be available for a main event match against Roman Reigns, but that’s not on the cards due to Rock not having time to prepare, so Reigns is facing Cody Rhodes instead.

On today’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer spoke about how if Reigns vs Rock went ahead, WWE had planned to create a new championship for the main event of WrestleMania night one, which would likely have been won by Rhodes.

He said:

“If it was Roman and The Rock, they were gonna create a championship on Saturday night that Cody probably would have ended up winning.

“It was Cody, Drew (McIntyre) or (Seth) Rollins that was gonna come out of that one. Because they wanna go back to two titles.”

WrestlingNews.co had originally reported that, as of a few weeks ago, WWE had been planning the two nights’ big titles matches as:

Night 1 – Seth Rollins vs Drew McIntyre or Cody Rhodes

Night 2 – Roman Reigns vs The Rock or Cody Rhodes

WWE seemingly made a point of saying during Raw last night that both of Roman Reigns’ titles (WWE and Universal) are separate, and are not viewed as one unified title.

That means, per Meltzer’s explanation, that there are two top championships and therefore another one isn’t going to be created because then there would be three – the split of having two different champions will just happen after WrestleMania because Reigns vs Rhodes will be for both of the championships.

Another thing that would back this up is that WWE has seemingly set up WrestleMania plans for Seth Rollins vs Logan Paul, and Drew McIntyre to be in a three-way for the Intercontinental Championship with GUNTHER and Sheamus, so it doesn’t look like that Rollins vs McIntyre title match will be going ahead.

Of course this is still a bit of an uncertain situation so we’ll let you know if there are any updates.
