Major Title Change During NXT Tapings – SPOILERS

We have had our latest set of NXT tapings following the NXT TakeOver: Phoenix, and boy were they eventful.

This article contains spoilers, obviously.

Velveteen Dream defeated Johnny Gargano to win the NXT North American Championship after cashing in his title opportunity earned by winning the Worlds Collide tournament at Royal Rumble Axxess.

Some fans have however been left confused as Gargano re-appeared later that evening holding the belt. Speculation is that NXT is keeping fans guessing as to which storyline they will run with when aired on the Network.

Here are the rest of the results from the tapings:

February 6

  • Gargano comes out amidst “You Deserve It” chants, but is immediately interrupted by Tommaso Ciampa who congratulates Johnny on following his lead. They are then interrupted by Velveteen Dream, who informs them that he wants a match with Gargano for the North American Championship, and a match is scheduled.
  • Jaxson Ryker defeats Mansoor, a Saudi Arabian jobber seen at the Greatest Royal Rumble. The Forgotten Sons then cut a promo saying they’ll tear through the roster.
  • 205 Live Star Drew Gulak appears for a match with Eric Bugenhagen, which he wins with relative ease. He then explains that he’s too good for NXT and just had to prove it, which brings out Matt Riddle. Riddle then defeats Gulak in a highly technical battle.
  • Io Shirai, Kairi Sane and Bianca Belair defeat Shayna Baszler, Jessmyn Duke, Marina Shafir in a six-woman tag match.

February 14

  • Dominik Dijakovic defeats Shane Thorne in a fun match.
  • Stacey Ervin Jr and Humberto Carrillo come out for a match, but are interrupted by Kassius Ohno who tells the crowd he’s sick of the NXT atmosphere and that he’s leaving. Keith Lee comes out and mocks Ohno, setting up a match.
  • Stacey Ervin Jr and Humberto Carrillo take on Street Profits, a match with the latter win. Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel, Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch appear, but then the War Raiders interrupt and say the teams will need to prove they are capable of a title shot. Undisputed Era attempt to attack Rowe and Hanson from behind but War Raiders finish the segment standing tall.
  • Aliyah defeats Taynara Conti, but then out come Baszler, Shafir and Duke to warn the rest of the roster not to piss them off.
  • Ricochet defeats Adam Cole. UE immediately attack Ricochet, Aleister Black tries to make a save but is hit with a superkick, and US pose above them.
  • Keith Lee defeats Kassius Ohno after blocking a low blow attempt. Lee has new entrance music which he sings himself.
  • Aleister Black defeats Roderick Strong, gets attacked after the match by UE but Ricochet makes the save.
  • Velveteen Dream defeats Johnny Gargano to win the North American title, but is attacked by Gargano after the match, who reappears with the title and poses with Tommaso Ciampa and their titles.
