A major NJPW championship has been vacated, while another has changed hands at the most recent Road To Castle Attack event.
It has been previously covered that Hiromu Takahashi had suffered a serious pectoral injury. Expecting to be out of action for 6 months, Takahashi has now vacated the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.
At the beginning of today’s Road To Castle Attack show, Takahashi told fans that he’s relinquishing the title for the sake of the junior heavyweight division.
Takahashi was originally scheduled to defend his championship against El Phantasmo this weekend. Instead, Takahashi asked fellow LIJ member BUSHI to take his place in the match.
Elsewhere on the card, another junior heavyweight title changed hands. The team of Taiji Ishimori and El Phantasmo of Bullet Club defended their IWGP Tag Team Championship against Yoshinobu Kanemaru and El Desperado of Suzuki-Gun.
Suzuki-Gun defeated the Bullet Club team to secure the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships for the third time.
El Desperado felt like he was on a winning streak, asking to be added to the Castle Attack match for the vacant IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.
NJPW Castle Attack takes place on February 27 and 28 and will see Tetsuya Naito challenge Kota Ibushi for the IWGP Junior Intercontinental Championship.
