On Friday evening, WWE shockingly announced that it had come to terms with the release of Zelina Vega. Ten minutes before her release was confirmed, Vega tweeted her support for unionization.
Following on from this, Gabrielle Carteris, President of SAG-AFTRA (the US’ largest labor union), tweeted Zelina Vega, thanking the former WWE star for “standing strong for labor solidarity”.
Hey @Zelina_VegaWWE. Thanks for standing strong for labor solidarity. I support you. Please email me PresidentCarteris@sagaftra.org
Following the tweet this weekend, Spectrum Sports reporter Jon Alba decided to reach out to Carteris and SAG-AFTRA, and he received this rather interesting response:
“Wrestling is as much about media as it is sports, and we are going to directly engage with members of this profession to help find ways for them to protect themselvs.
“As more people reinvest in unions, and as more working people are harassed by employers who don’t want to protect them, SAG-AFTRA is committed to doing what we can to help professional wrestlers secure the protections they deserve.”
SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris.
This is certainly rather interesting, as it seems to be one of the first time that a large US labor union has publicly showed their support and offered their services to people working in professional wrestling.
Interestingly, the statement doesn’t address WWE by name, so it seems like the help/support everyone within professional wrestling, regardless of the company that they work for and are contracted to.
