Major WWE Backlash 2025 Match Plans Revealed

Major WWE Backlash 2025 Match Plans Revealed WWE

WWE’s plans to stage a major title match at the Backlash Premium Live Event on May 10 have been revealed.

Following his record-breaking 17th world championship win over Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania 41 Night Two, John Cena’s first opponent as the new Undisputed WWE Champion was seemingly revealed on Monday Night Raw.

After showing up in Las Vegas to follow up on his claims that he would “ruin wrestling” when he became champion, Cena was laid out by an RKO from familiar foe Randy Orton, who emerged from under the ring to stake his claim for Cena’s gold.

With WWE’s next PLE Backlash taking place on May 10 in Orton’s hometown of St. Louis, MO, it seemed clear that WWE were setting up a match between The Viper and Cena on the show.

Now, courtesy of WrestleVotes those plans have been confirmed, with WWE planning to have Cena vs. Orton main event Backlash, in what will be the pair’s first one-on-one meeting in over eight years.

WrestleVotes also noted that the match will be billed as “One Last Time”, writing on Twitter:

Surprise, surprise: The main event of Backlash is set to be John Cena vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Championship—billed as “one last time.”

This will be their first singles match since 2/11/17, when they headlined a house show in New Mexico.

The history between Cena and Orton throughout their over two decades in WWE is as storied as they come, with both emerging through WWE’s former developmental promotion Ohio Valley Wrestling at the same time before making their television debuts at separate times in 2002 on SmackDown.

Their rivalry throughout the late 2000s and early to mid 2010s is fondly remembered by fans of WWE during that time, with Orton being just three world championship wins behind Cena heading into Backlash.

We will provide updates on more of WWE’s plans for the Backlash 2025 card as more news becomes available.
