Rumors have been flying around ever since his surprise No.27 entry in the 2018 Royal Rumble that Rey Mysterio is on his way back to wrestle in the WWE.
There has been speculation about different matches he could have lined up, including a supposed WrestleMania showdown with none other than John Cena.
But this could all be in jeopardy after the masked legend reportedly injured his left bicep in a tag-team match at a show in Connecticut on Friday, March 2.
According to the omniscient Dave Meltzer, Mysterio injured his arm during the match, where he teamed with Flip Gordon to face former WWE tag champion Joey Mercury and Impact Wrestling’s Caleb Konley (AKA Suicide), and despite managing to finishing the match, videos show Rey visibly struggling with pain in his left arm.
Meltzer also reported severe swelling to Mysterio’s arm after the match – a sign of a torn biceps – which could delay any thoughts of a return for many months if he were to undergo surgery.
If true, it’s the same injury sustained by former NXT champion Drew McIntyre at NXT Takeover: WarGames, an injury the Scotsman is still recovering from.
This could have wider ramifications for another of the world’s largest wrestling promotions, New Japan Pro Wrestling, as Rey was due to face Jushin Thunder Liger at their March 25 show Strong Style Evolved.
So far these are just rumors, and Rey has not released a statement regarding the injury. Depending on the severity, we may have to wait a long time to see ‘Mr 619’ back inside a WWE ring.
