Stone Cold Steve Austin has opened up about scrapped plans for his WWE return at WrestleMania 40 in April 2024.

The main event of WrestleMania 40 Night Two stands as one of the most memorable matches in recent WWE history, with Cody Rhodes ending Roman Reigns’ 1316 day Undisputed WWE Championship reign and The Undertaker and John Cena making appearances to help counter interference from The Bloodline and The Rock.

While it was a memorable match, many fans expected to also see Stone Cold Steve Austin make his WWE comeback given his storied history with The Rock dating back to the Attitude Era.

Speaking with Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Austin confirmed that WWE had pitched the idea of his return to him, however, other commitments meant he couldn’t do it:

“Things just didn’t line up. I had other things going on. I remember when they pitched that to me. I said, dude, I got some things going on. I don’t see myself being there. That was way in advance. Was it pitched to me, or did they want me there? Yeah. But I wasn’t in a position to go.”

Austin continued, saying that he could have made his return had he chose to, but it simply “didn’t work” for him:

“No, there was a possibility that I could have been there had I chose to go there. I had other sh*t going on.

“WWE is this multi-billion dollar corporation. I got a metal shop that we’re sitting in. So sometimes the multi-billion dollar company has an idea that the dude that has the metal shop [should make an appearance], it just don’t work. So it didn’t work. I’m over here in my metal shop.

“I like to do as much as I can with WWE when it works, when it works for them, when it works for me, and when it’s going to be fun. But in that, and saying that, not everything lines up on a timeline basis, I had other sh*t going on.”

While he missed WrestleMania 40, Austin did return to WWE the following year at WrestleMania 41 NighT Two in Las Vegas, NV – with the “Texas Rattlesnake” announcing the total attendance inside  Allegiant Stadium across the weekend.
