Mark Henry Reflects On Losing To John Cena Following WWE ‘Retirement’ Promo WWE

Mark Henry has reflected on his loss to John Cena following his famous WWE retirement promo in June 2013.

AJ Styles’ fake retirement promo on SmackDown (May 31) has drawn many comparisons to a similar one made by WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry over a decade prior on a June 2013 episode of WWE Raw.

In the promo Henry gave an emotional speech where he appeared to calling time on his career, only to attack WWE Champion John Cena and facilitate a bout between the two at the 2013 Money in the Bank pay-per-view.

Despite many fans at the time feeling that Henry should have dethroned Cena for the title, the World’s Strongest Man has now shared his own take on the result.

Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Henry revealed that he was actually in favor of not winning the WWE Championship – admitting that he genuinely was wanting to end his in-ring career prior to delivering the famous promo, however, Vince McMahon would convince him otherwise.

Henry explained:

I built that for a year. It was a calendar year of me going, ‘I think I’m done.’ When my contract came up, I actually told Vince, ‘I’m not re-signing.’ Then he did the ‘come into my office. Let me talk to you.’

“He talked me into coming back and doing all that. People mad at WWE, guys, don’t be mad at WWE because I lost to John Cena.

“The same way that I did not want to beat Taker at WrestleMania is the same way that I did not want to have to carry the strap and the pressure of that. Also, my body couldn’t do it.”

Despite being keen on retiring as far back as 2013, Henry’s last match in WWE wouldn’t come until April 2018.
