Matt Cardona Defends One Day WWE Intercontinental Title Reign

Matt Cardona (fka Zack Ryder) has defended WWE’s decision to have him hold the Intercontinental Championship for just one day.

At WrestleMania 32 in 2016, Cardona defeated Kevin Owens, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, Sami Zayn, Sin Cara (Cinta de Oro), and Stardust (Cody Rhodes) in a ladder match to win the IC Title. Unfortunately for Cardona, he was pinned for the gold by The Miz the very next night on Raw.

On Twitter, Cardona was asked whether he knew his reign was going to be short when he won the gold. Disagreeing that Vince McMahon ‘ruined’ his WrestleMania moment, Cardona argued his reign was so memorable because it was just one day, tweeting:

“I did know. And I disagree with you…the reason the moment was so great and memorable is because it was only for 1 day. That was my story. Who would have cared if I would have lost it 2 months later at In Your House?”

Cardona was released by WWE in April, 2020. On Thursday’s edition of IMPACT, Cardona will face Eddie Edwards and W. Morrissey in a three-way #1 contenders match for the IMPACT World Championship.
