Matt Hardy On Why His ‘Broken’ Character Didn’t Work In AEW

Matt Hardy has explained why he believes his ‘Broken’ gimmick didn’t work when he initially introduced the character in AEW.

Hardy made his AEW debut as ‘Broken Matt Hardy’ on the March 18, 2020 edition of Dynamite. A few months later, Hardy officially dropped the gimmick, which didn’t achieve the same success in AEW as it had previously done in IMPACT, ROH and on the independent circuit.

Speaking with EssentiallySports, Hardy stated that Broken Matt Hardy’s character is largely driven by fans, so the gimmick couldn’t adapt well to the pandemic-era no-crowd shows.

Teasing an eventual return to the Broken Universe, Hardy said:

“The Broken Matt Hardy character is a very fan driven character. It was just very hard for it to work as it should have without fans in the venue. Obviously the whole world was in the midst of this pandemic, so we just changed courses and I went to a more reality based character in Big Money Matt. We took a step back from Broken Matt, and who knows? Maybe now that fans are back, you’ll see Broken Matt again down the road.”

On numerous occasions, Matt Hardy has expressed a desire to team with his brother, Jeff Hardy, in AEW. Following Jeff’s WWE release on December 9, Matt and the Young Bucks teased a tag-team rematch.
