Matt Hardy Discusses Why ‘Broken’ Character Hasn’t Worked In AEW

Matt Hardy has had a string of particularly bad luck in regards to his ‘Broken’ character. This began with the treatment of him and his character in WWE and continued with the start of the pandemic coinciding with his AEW debut.

Hardy recently spoke with Asbury Park Press where he discussed his iconic character. More specifically, he discussed how the character needs an audience to succeed. Here is the quote:

“Broken Matt Hardy is a very audience-friendly character. It needs a crowd, it needs an audience, and it just was not in the cards to be Broken Matt Hardy … because his debut was in the first-ever empty arena era, pandemic-era show, the first empty arena show that AEW had. Broken Matt Hardy is … very theatrical, and it doesn’t translate as well to the current AEW audience that sits at home and watches (on television) because I’ve realized that this is a much younger audience. It’s a much more sports-centric-type audience.”

Since Full Gear, Hardy has transformed into his new heelish character. Now, he will face Hangman Page at AEW Revolution with his and Page’s first-quarter earnings on the line.
