Nixed plans for Mercedes Mone’s first loss in AEW have now been revealed, following her latest championship loss.
Mercedes Mone has yet to lose a singles match in AEW, with her only defeat on record coming in tag-team action, teaming with Harley Cameron against Athena & Julia Hart.
It has now been revealed that Mone could’ve suffered a singles loss recently, if it wasn’t for All In plans changing.
Per Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Mercedes Mone was willing to lose to Athena in their Owen Hart Foundation Tournament semifinal match on
Discussing the original plans for All In Texas, Meltzer wrote:
“Regarding Mercedes Mone not having lost in AEW since her debut, those close to her say she was willing to lose to Athena to build a rematch at All In, but when the Toni Storm vs. Mone match was decided upon, it made no sense for her to lose that match and not win the Owen Hart tournament.
“The original idea months back still involved Mariah May for the stadium show but obviously that was changed when May wasn’t going to sign a new deal, so they wanted to do the biggest match for women in the company on the biggest show.”
Mone defeated Zeuxis at the June 18 AEW Grand Slam Mexico event, adding the CMLL Women’s Championship to her collection, alongside the AEW TBS, RevPro British Women’s and EWA Women’s titles.
In addition to these, she also carries the Owen Hart Tournament winners belt, and the SWE Queen of Southside Championship belt which was previously unified with the RevPro gold, meaning she now has six physical belts in her collection.
She will have the opportunity to win a seventh, with Mone to challenge for Toni Storm’s AEW Women’s Championship at All In Texas.
