With the second annual AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door show on the horizon, many had speculated that we could see Mercedes Mone (Sasha Banks) appear on the show.
Mercedes was injured at the NJPW Resurgence event, losing the final of the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship tournament to AEW’s Willow Nightingale, so she seemingly will not be fit to make the show.
It was recently noted in a Sports Illustrated story that AEW and Mercedes were in talks prior to her injury, and Fightful Select (subscription required) has provided more information.
Fightful notes that they have not confirmed that AEW and Mercedes were in talks as noted by SI, but there has been interest from AEW prior to her injury at Resurgence.
Several references to Mercedes have been made on AEW television, and Fightful notes that there had been an inquiry about the possibility of her appearing on the Forbidden Door show later this month.
Those with knowledge of the situation have claimed to Fightful that AEW had spoken to NJPW, or some with ties to NJPW, in an attempt to get the appearance set, but it is not known if any progress was made in that sense.
Sources on the NJPW side told Fightful that the potential of Mercedes being used in AEW was brought up as far back as January, with Forbidden Door also being brought up at that point, but Fightful notes that also did not hear of any progress in that regard.
NJPW believes that the injury that Mercedes suffered at Resurgence will have her out of action through the Forbidden Door show, but there was at least interest in her appearing on the show from AEW’s side.
Prior to her injury, there were some AEW talent that believed she was coming in for the show, with rumours that she would be working against Saraya, which Fightful was unable to confirm if there were plans for.
Mercedes was originally slated to win the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship at Resurgence, with her injury forcing a change with Willow winning the title.
Willow is set to defend the NJPW Strong on tonight’s ROH show against Rachael Ellering.
