AEW World Champion MJF paid homage to a top WWE star during his title match at AEW Double or Nothing 2023.
During the May 28 pay-per-view, MJF defended his gold in a fourway bout against Sammy Guevara, Jack Perry and Darby Allin.
These stars have previously been referred to as the ‘four pillars’ of AEW, with many believing that these talents will carry the company’s main event scene for years to come.
During the bout, there was a spot in which each pillar utilized a move from their previous mentors.
The sequence was capped off by MJF who dropped Jack Perry with a Cross Rhodes, a tribute to former AEW EVP Cody Rhodes.
The other mentors referenced in the spot were Sting, Chris Jericho and Christian Cage, with Darby Allin using the Scorpion Death Drop, Guevara using a Codebreaker, and Jack Perry using an Unprettier.
You can watch a clip of this awesome sequence below.
Cody Rhodes notably handpicked MJF to be in his corner during Rhodes’ early AEW career. After MJF turned on Rhodes at Full Gear 2019, the rising star defeated his mentor at Revolution 2020.
Rhodes notably left AEW in February 2022 and returned to WWE two months later. He most recently wrestled at Saturday’s Night of Champions premium live event, losing to Brock Lesnar after passing out in his Kimura lock.
