More details are now known about a potential WWE surprise for Cody Rhodes that was seemingly teased earlier today.
While WWE is headed to primetime television this Saturday night (December 14) for Saturday Night’s Main Event on NBC, the theme is very much a throwback to the original iteration of the show.
Being broadcast from the same arena and accompanied by retro music and graphics, the event will also feature special appearances including Jesse Ventura on commentary.
Earlier, WWE shared a clip of Triple H presenting Cody Rhodes with mystery item for “one night only” at SNME, which many fans predicted was the Winged Eagle championship belt.
In a follow-up report from Fightful Select, it was noted that there have been discussions within WWE about using the classic Winged Eagle title belt with Cody Rhodes being among those pushing for it.
Cody has been publicly vocal about pushing for the belt to return, or at least a redesign to incorporate classic elements into a new design.
Fightful’s report also stated that according to sources, “a number of talent have mentioned bringing back classic titles”.
The designs of the WWE Tag Team Championship, World Tag Team Championship and World Heavyweight Championship belts were said to be crafted with the ‘classic’ inspirations in mind.
The ‘Big Gold’ belt was said to be an inspiration that was “important to WWE”.
It’s worth noting that the report didn’t actually confirm that the “one night only” surprise teased by Triple H and Cody Rhodes actually is the return of the Winged Eagle, so that’s still not known to 100% be the case.
