In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has discussed Chris Jericho pitching a major champion vs. champion match between WWE and NJPW in the summer of 2018.
Meltzer noted that Chris Jericho, who was still affiliated with WWE despite not being under contract with the promotion, was working for NJPW, and pitched for the two companies to work together:
Jericho later proposed an idea of, as IC champion in New Japan, wrestling the IC champion of WWE on a big PPV show, and McMahon wouldn’t go for that idea. This was all before AEW was in existence
Chris Jericho has actually discussed this idea before on his podcast, noting that the match would have been against Seth Rollins, who was the WWE Intercontinental Champion at the time:
“I placed a call to a certain head of a certain wrestling company, let’s just leave it at that. I said what do you think about first-time ever Intercontinental Champion vs Intercontinental Champion, Jericho vs. [Seth] Rollins? New Japan vs. WWE.”
