New AEW Tournament Name Revealed? AEW

The name of a potential new AEW tournament has now been revealed following a new trademark filing from the company.

AEW has a number of tournament that it runs throughout the year, with the most notable ones being the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, with the winner getting a World Championship match at All In, and the Continental Classic, which begins every November.

However, it seems that a new tournament may be on the horizon revolving around the Continental Championship, currently held by Jon Moxley.

AEW Continental Cup Trademarked

Today, it was revealed that All Elite Wrestling had filed for the trademark ‘Continental Cup’, for use in professional wrestling matches.

The description of the filing reads:

While the rules of the tournament have not yet been made official, it will likely be a different tournament to the already existing Continental Classic tournament.

The History Of The AEW Continental Classic

Beginning back in 2023 as the company’s answer to New Japan Pro Wrestling’s G1 Climax Tournament, the AEW Continental Classic has quickly become the most exciting time of the year for AEW fans.

The tournament sees 12 wrestlers put into two blocks, the blue league and the gold league, with a round robin style tournament taking place within the block.

The matches have 20 minute time limits, with 3 points awarded for a win, a single point awarded for a draw, and zero points awarded for a loss.

The winner of the blue league goes on to face the runner up in the gold league, and vice versa, in the semi-finals of the tournament, with the two winners of those matches meeting at AEW Worlds End to determine the Continental Classic winner and AEW Continental Champion.

The inaugural tournament saw Eddie Kingston defeat Jon Moxley in the final to become the first AEW Continental Champion, with Kazuchika Okada defeating Will Ospreay in the 2024 final to retain the title he had captured from Kingston earlier in the year.

Last December, Jon Moxley became the third Continental Classic winner, defeating then-reigning champion Kazuchika Okada at Worlds End to capture the Continental Championship, which he still holds to this day.
