New Japan Pro Wrestling Cancels Best Of The Super Juniors

It was an inevitability at this point, but New Japan Pro Wrestling has officially canceled the Best of the Super Juniors tournament. The competition was intended to run from May 12 to June 6.

The annual junior heavyweight tournament typically features either 16 or 20 participants as they compete in a round-robin competition. Typically, the winner receives an IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship match at Dominion.

New Japan announced the cancelation on their website last night.

“In response to the continuing Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, and in light of the extension of state of emergency measures across Japan, New Japan Pro-Wrestling has arrived at the decision to cancel all events on the Best of the Super Junior 27 tour that was scheduled between May 12 and June 6.

We deeply apologise to fans who were looking forward to these events. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the disease. As eager as everyone at New Japan Pro-Wrestling is to return to the ring as soon as possible, the health and safety of our fans, wrestlers and staff, as well as society at large is our utmost concern.”

New Japan has not run a show since February 26. They were one of the first promotions affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Hiromu Takahashi is the current IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion and would have faced the winner of the tournament. Alas, it is still unclear when New Japan will be able to safely return.
