New Title Match Added To NXT TakeOver

A new championship match has been added to the upcoming NXT TakeOver special event that will air live on the WWE Network on October 4.

In his first defence of the North American Championship on a TakeOver, Damian Priest will defend against a former holder of that very belt, Johnny Gargano.

For the last few weeks, Gargano has been on TV by sitting in his house while Candice LeRae and Tegan Nox argue with each other like teenage girls, so this has come a bit out of nowhere.

Priest won the title at the last TakeOver event last month in a five-way ladder match against Cameron Grimes, Bronson Reed, Velveteen Dream, and Gargano himself. He picked up his first retention over Timothy Thatcher last Wednesday.

The announcement was made by General Manager William Regal on Twitter, who wrote:

One of @WWENXT’s rising stars vs. arguably the most consistent performer on the black and gold brand. In his first #NXTTakeOver defense, @ArcherOfInfamy will defend the #WWENXT North American Title against @JohnnyGargano.

At this point the only other matches confirmed for TakeOver are matches for the NXT and Women’s Titles. The challengers for Finn Balor and Io Shirai will be decided on tonight’s episode of NXT. We’ll have live coverage of the show later tonight on the site.
