Nick Aldis Says Spot With Top WWE Star Was ‘Called On The Fly’ WWE

SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis has recalled a spot with a top WWE star that was “called on the fly”.

Following his long-awaited return from a serious back injury at Survivor Series 2023, much was made regarding which brand Randy Orton was going to sign with between Raw and SmackDown.

On the December 1 SmackDown, Orton committed his future to the blue brand in order to pursue revenge against The Bloodline and Roman Reigns.

After Orton signed his contract he had his arm raised by SmackDown GM Nick Aldis, who was unsurprisingly elated to have signed the veteran.

Unfortunately for Aldis that would be short-lived, as Orton gave him a surprise RKO for his recruitment efforts much to the delight of the live crowd.

Speaking to Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Aldis revealed that the RKO was not originally a part of the script, and was instead an “audible” called while the pair were in the ring.

Aldis recalled:

“It was called on the fly. It was an audible, It’s Roman. It’s Randy. Who is he going to sign with? He was going to sign the SmackDown contract and staredown Roman, and I think that was it.

“Somebody told somebody to tell somebody while I was ringside. I had to then go in and call it. Incidentally, I’ve never gotten to the bottom of who was behind it.

“It seems to have been one of these moments that connects. There seems to be a heightened level of interest on that particular moment because it was quite out of the blue. It was really out of the blue, even for me.”

Thankfully for Nick Aldis, he was not the only GM to be given an RKO in the last 12 months, as his Raw counterpart Adam Pearce finally also got hit by Orton’s signature move at WWE Crown Jewel, something Aldis reacted to afterwards.
