New Japan Pro Wrestling has announced the participants for the 2021 Super Junior Tag League.
The annual tournament acts the same as New Japan’s other round-robin tournaments, this time focusing on the promotion’s junior heavyweight tag teams.
The winner typically gets an IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship match at Wrestle Kingdom. However, with this year’s tournament taking place in August, the title match will likely come before that.
The six teams competing in this year’s Super Junior Tag League are:
- El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori
- Roppongi 3K (SHO & YOH)
- Suzuki-Gun (Yoshinobu Kanemaru & El Desperado)
- Team One or Eight (Ryusuke Taguchi & Master Wato)
- Far East Connection (Gedo & Dick Togo)
- Robbie Eagles & Tiger Mask
The Super Junior Tag League will run from August 7 to August 17.
Last year’s tournament was cancelled due to the pandemic, meaning Roppongi 3K enter this year’s tournament as the defending champs. SHO and YOH have won the last two Tag Leagues in 2018 and 2019. They are also the only team competing that has won the tournament in the past.
Other notable entrants are the current IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions El Phantasmo and Taiji Ishimori, and the new IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Robbie Eagles who teams with Tiger Mask IV.
