New Japan Pro-Wrestling has announced the third edition of a pro-wrestling event that NJPW hasn’t run since 2020.
According to the official press release (translated from Japanese), the New Japan Pro-Wrestling Concurso was introduced in 2019 with the second instalment running in 2020.
The 2021 edition was postponed due to the global pandemic that forced many countries into lockdown.
Now, in 2022, the event is back.
A Concurso is described as a “bodybuilding competition for professional wrestlers held in CMLL, Mexico.”
NJPW, however, have tweaked the formula, with their press release stating:
“This “New Japan Pro-Wrestling Concurso” went beyond the concept of a bodybuilding competition, and was held as a physical contest to compete for “Whose body is the coolest, amazing, and favorite?” instead of a professional evaluation.”
The event will take place on December 22 and 23 2022 backstage at the Korakeun Hall Road to Tokyo Dome event.
Per the press release, voting will take place online.
The 2019 New Japan Pro-Wrestling Concurso saw SHO become the First Generation Mr New Japan with 3574 votes.
The 2020 New Japan Pro-Wrestling Concurso saw Kota Ibushi become the 2nd Generation Mr New Japan with 3866 votes.
