Kota Ibushi has won the last two G1 Climax tournaments, defeating Jay White in the 2019 finals, and SANADA to be crowned the 2020 winner. Ibushi won the IWGP Intercontinental and Heavyweight Championships at Wrestle Kingdom 15, before the titles were unified into the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in March.

The winner of the tournament typically receives a contract for a title match at Wrestle Kingdom, which they have to defend on the road to the January event. NJPW have revealed that Wrestle Kingdom 16 in 2022 will be a three-night event.
