New Japan Pro Wrestling’s month-long tournament has come to a close. After a hard-fought G1 Climax 30, the winner has finally been crowned. For the second year in a row, Kota Ibushi captured the prestigious honour of being the G1 Climax winner.
Ibushi had come out on top of the A Block, last defeating TAICHI to win the block. This marked his third straight tournament final. While that was an impressive feat, Ibushi was not content with simply making the final.
On the other side was SANADA, who was making his G1 Climax Final debut. The two battled for about a half-hour with Ibushi finally getting the win with a pair of Kamigoyes.
With the tournament win under his belt, Ibushi will now have the opportunity to challenge Tetsuya Naito for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 15. Ibushi was unable to wrest the title away from Kazuchika Okada at last year’s Tokyo Dome event, so perhaps this will be the year that he is able to claim New Japan’s richest prize.
Ibushi is the first person to win back-to-back G1 Climaxes since Hiroyoshi Tenzan accomplished the feat in 2003 and 2004.
