Toru Yano has claimed the NJPW ‘King of Pro Wrestling 2021’ title, after successfully defending the provisional trophy for the final time.
During the December 24 Road To Tokyo Dome show, Yano defeated Yoshinobu Kanemaru in an End of Year Party match to retain his trophy. As per the stipulation, both competitors had to drink whiskey at two minute intervals during the wrestling bout.
The way the KOPW trophy works is that wrestlers will challenge for the provisional trophy throughout the year, with whoever is holding the trophy at the end of the year crowned the King of Pro Wrestling for that year, before the title resets in January.
Yano originally won the trophy at Wrestle Kingdom 15, before losing it to Chase Owens at the July Wrestle Grand Slam in the Tokyo Dome event. Yano won the trophy back at Wrestle Grand Slam in MetLife Dome in an I Quit match.
This is Yano’s second straight year as King of Pro Wrestling, becoming the inaugural official champion in 2020.
