With an IWGP title defence coming, an update has been provided on the status of Mercedes Mone’s contract with Bushiroad.
Mone made her NJPW in-ring debut at Battle in the Valley in February 2023, defeating KAIRI to become the second-ever IWGP Women’s Champion.
Dave Meltzer has provided an update on the champion’s contract in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), writing:
“As of right now, Mercedes Mone has no dates left with Bushiroad after the 4/23 Yokohama Arena show.
“Unless that changes, logic would say she would drop the IWGP title to Mayu Iwatani at that show. If Mone wins, it would mean she’s reached an agreement for a longer deal.”
Mone is set to face AZM at NJPW Sakura Genesis in Tokyo, Japan on April 8.
Meltzer had previously revealed that Mone would go on to face Iwatani, though the match can’t be announced until after the NJPW Sakura Genesis show.
Mone has recently stated that she will face anyone, specifically “whoever has the biggest bag”.
