The plans of Mercedes Mone to win her second NJPW championship were changed following an injury sustained on May 21.
During the May 21 NJPW Resurgence show, a four-woman tournament took place to crown the inaugural NJPW STRONG Women’s titleholder.
With the main event of the show seeing AEW’s Willow Nightingale taking on Mone for to be crown the first NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion, Mone would favor her leg during the match.
As previously reported, post-match she would be helped backstage with a reported broken ankle.
Mone would confirm that she had sustained an injury on her Twitter account.
It would later be revealed that WWE’s Tamina had been in attendance at the show to support Mone and had also helped the NJPW star when she was backstage.
PW Insider has provided further details of the plans for the NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship, confirming that Mone was set to become the inaugural champion.
