While New Japan Pro Wrestling returned for their first official show yesterday, today marked the start of the New Japan Cup. The promotion’s single elimination tournament will determine the next challenger for Tetsuya Naito. While there is a long way to go, part of the tournament has started to take shape.
There were four first round matches on today’s show and while none of them resulted in an upset, many of them were entertaining.
Here are the results from New Japan Cup Night One:
- Togi Makabe def. Yota Tsuji
- Toru Yano def. Jado
- Minoru Suzuki, Zack Sabre Jr., TAICHI & Yoshinobu Kanemaru def. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kota Ibushi, Yuji Nagata & Yuya Uemura
- Hiromu Takahashi def. Tomoaki Honma
- Tomohiro Ishii def. El Desperado
This means that Makabe, Yano, Takahashi, and Ishii have moved on to the second round. The Ishii vs. Desperado match has been called one of the best matches since the pandemic started. Considering the men involved, it is easy to believe.
The next night of the tournament will take place tomorrow. This will mark the third straight day of New Japan Pro Wrestling action so if you are a fan that should make you happy.
