NJPW President Takami Ohbari has commented on AEW’s rapid growth, following the announcement of the Forbidden Door crossover event.
The stars of both NJPW and AEW will be in action on June 26 at the United Center in Chicago.
Speaking with Sports Illustrated, Ohbari argued that AEW has been so successful in such a short timeframe because the product meets fans’ previously unmet needs.
Discussing the impact of AEW on the US wrestling landscape, Ohbari said:
“AEW has undergone tremendous growth in a very short timeframe. From a fan’s perspective that has a lot to do with meeting the ‘unmet needs’ of the consumer.
“Creative matchmaking and exciting wrestling have been able to satisfy fans who had been left disillusioned by the American wrestling landscape.
“From a business standpoint, for a new entrant into the field to be able to leverage a fresh identity and sculpt such an effective media strategy, it is very impressive.”
NJPW and AEW have maintained a partnership since February 2021 which has seen the two companies occasionally share talent, most recently with AEW’s Jon Moxley facing Will Ospreay in the main event of Windy City Riot.
Following the match, Moxley called out former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi for next month’s Capital Collision event.
Eddie Kingston will do battle with a popular NJPW star at Capital Collision, which you can read more about right here.
