New Japan Pro Wrestling’s biggest show of the year is almost upon us. Wrestle Kingdom 15 will take place over two days on January 4 and 5 and one of the biggest stars in the company has very big aspirations.
Kota Ibushi is set to challenge Tetsuya Naito for the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championships on Night One. Should he win he will capture the promotion’s main prize for the first time. However, his sights are set even higher.
While speaking with njpw1972.com, Ibushi said if he defeats Naito and Jay White at Wrestle Kingdom 15 he could become God. Here is the quote:
“I think there’s so much I can do with both titles. I’ve said it a lot before, I think the Intercontinental title is for the strongest, and the Heavyweight is for the best. To hold both of those titles, and beat Tetsuya Naito to do it, that makes me hotter than ever. And beating Jay White on top of that? That wipes out that 2020 record, wipes out those three losses. I think I really could become God at that point.”
For those who don’t know, Ibushi’s finisher is called the ‘Kamigoye’ which means “to surpass God” in Japanese.
Ibushi won the G1 Climax tournament in October to earn his title shot at Wrestle Kingdom 15. However, he lost the title shot to Jay White at Power Struggle, although White cheated to get the win. To make things right, Ibushi is getting the shot on the first night while White will challenge on the second night.
