Tokyo Sports has announced that a match from NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 14 from January has won its 2020 match of the year award.
The honour this time around goes to Kazuchika Okada vs Testuya Naito from night two of Wrestle Kingdom for the IWGP Heavyweight Title and IWGP Intercontinental Title.
This marks the seventh year in a row that Okada has been in Tokyo Sports’ Match of the Year, and eighth year in total.
However, it was Naito who picked up Tokyo Sports’ MVP of the year award. Hiromu Takahashi won this year’s Fighting Spirit award.
Naito said (translated by Google):
“I’m glad that the match against Okada was selected as the best bout. I think that the spotlight on that match will make you want to create that kind of space again and see that kind of professional wrestling. I haven’t been able to cover it for a while, but I was lonely too. By delivering it, did you remember a little?
“Next year’s goal? I want to have the best professional wrestling in the best space. It shouldn’t be possible to make it with wrestlers alone. In the past, I mentioned dome tours, but now I can enjoy professional wrestling with everyone more than such a big goal. Should we think about the coming day first? Of course, we are always ready for that.”
