Just days after Hiromu Takahashi captured the Best of the Super Juniors crown, New Japan Pro Wrestling held their Super J-Cup. Just as Takahashi was crowned the top junior heavyweight in his tournament, El Phantasmo outlasted the competition in his.
The Super J-Cup tournament was a single-elimination eight-man tournament as opposed to the Best of the Super Juniors round-robin format.
El Phantasmo’s path to the final began when he defeated Lio Rush in the first round. He was then able to get past Blake Christian to secure his spot in the final. On the other side of the bracket, ACH managed to defeat Impact stars TJP and Chris Bey to secure his spot opposite Phantasmo.
With the final set, El Phantasmo was able to outlast ACH to win his second consecutive Super J-Cup. El Phantasmo had previously won the 2019 tournament, defeating Dragon Lee in the final.
After the match, El Phantasmo called out Hiromu Takahashi. He challenged the Best of the Super Juniors winner to a match at Wrestle Kingdom 15. This likely means the two will wrestle on Night One and the winner will face IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Taiji Ishimori on Night Two.
